Plot hole in TV game show "Survivor"?

Okay, so I am a survivor noob, because I only watched the first
season. Well I was watching it again online, and found a possible plot
hole.

The final immunity challenge between Richard, Rudy and Kelly. Here it
is starting at 1:30.

Basically, the challenge was for them to keep their hands on the totem
pole, rotating positions every half hour, last person with hand on
totem pole wins the final immunity challenge.

Richard, as part of his strategy, gave up. Then a few hours later,
Rudy accidently took his hand off while rotating positions, so Kelly
won immunity.

So here's the plot hole: You've got this untimed immunity challenge
starting no more then ten hours before they hiked to tribal council.

So what happens if, when it comes the time where they would normally
start packing up and making their way to tribal council, they all
still had their hands on the pole?

Has that ever happened in an immunity challenge? Seeing how they do
the immunity challenge just hours before hiking to tribal council,
what happens if it's an untimed, last person standing kind of
challenge, and two or more people are still there come council time
and immunity is unresolved at that time?
