Was the first scene in A Serious Man at all relevent to the rest of the movie?

I loved the movie- seriously- maybe I loved it a little too much. But
I just don't get the opening scene at all. What was the point of it?
It had nothing to do with the rest of the movie, unless I missed
something. Did I?
