Happy Thursday! Also in today’s edition from the Broadsheet: Tom Cruise tries (kind of) to speak up Top Gun 2… Ryan Seacrest may land on Today… There's a film within the Oscar search known as The Lady inside a Septic Tank… and much more. · The biopic-y Alfred Hitchcock and the building of Psycho could have a clumsy working title along with a tortured history, however the lengthy-suffering Anthony Hopkins project apparently includes a new studio in Fox Searchlight, a brand new director in Sacha Gervasi, and — I'm able to’t even believe I’m penning this — new interest from Helen Mirren in playing Hitchcock’s wife Alma. To repeat: Hopkins and Mirren may take part in the Hitchcocks. I am talking about! Maybe Alison Brie can enjoy Jesse Leigh. [THR] · And today imagine Ryan Seacrest co-hosting Today. It might happen — if Matt Lauer decides to depart the show in 2012. Can Seacrest and Ann Curry be also within the same room without leaving some type of blistering, bloodstream-red-colored, category-5 cultural cyclone over the land? Will we actually want to discover? [WSJ via Deadline] · Tom Cruise isn’t carrying out a very convincing job of taking Top Gun 2 seriously: “I stated to Tony I wish to make another movie with him. We haven’t designed a film since Times of Thunder. Tony and that i and Jerry, we i never thought that people would try it again. They began arrive at us with one of these ideas of where it's now. I figured, ‘Wow, that might be… what we should could do now.’” [MTV] · Melancholia’s seem designer reveals about this ending: “It’s the loudest factor I've ever mixed. I needed it to struggle and fight using the Wagner piece, therefore it attempts to drown the Wagner piece. Yes, it’s just a little untidy, however i wanted so that it is very overwhelming and i believe I been successful with this.” And just how. I suggest sitting as near to the screen as you possibly can for optimum effect. [NYT] · Your mileage can vary, however the Lady inside a Septic Tank seems like precisely the type of foreign-language Oscar entry we have to enhance this season’s race. [THR] · Going a little off subject, is not probably the most effective political ads you’ve seen up to now within the 2012 presidential race? Well, besides some of Herman Cain’s, I suppose. Within this situation, Simmons, 42, whose wit, humor and frequently irreverent Sports Guy column have switched him in to the most prominent sportswriter in the united states, is mentioning to Grantland, the ESPN-backed site he released in June. By September, the website -- a mixture of intellectuals pontificating around the entertainment triumvirate of sports, popular culture and Hollywood -- was tempting 2.4 million unique site visitors per month, based on ComScore. It's quite an addition towards the Boston native and former America online blogger's portfolio, which boasts two best-selling books, the Peabody-winning 30 for 30 documentary series, 1.5 million Twitter fans and an accumulation of B.S. The Hollywood Reporter: Why did you choose to do Grantland? Bill Simmons: I'd spent 3 years focusing on this book, and that i was striking 40, and that i was like, "Exactly what do I wish to do lengthy-term?" I always aspired to produce a site which was sports and popular culture. 30 for 30 were built with a large impact because I loved how which was about finding, strengthening and dealing with one of these incredible company directors, and that i thought exactly the same factor perform for authors. I investigated different sites and looked through all my personal favorite magazines and attempted to locate individuals who were enroute up. PHOTOS: Hollywood's Greatest Fantasy Football Fans THR: How have you convince ESPN to finance it? Simmons: Simple -- I'd did it with someone else. My contract still had 10 several weeks to visit, and that we began speaking about this, and that i stated: "I wish to figure this out, and I wish to get it done here. But when we arrive at the finish of individuals 10 several weeks, I'm still going to get it done.Inch THR: Podcasts really are a large focus for you personally. It is possible to real business there? Simmons: Yes. I believe we are able to cut them into Television shows, and i believe ESPN and ESPN 2 can run them. That's why we built the studio to complete half-hour shows or hourlong shows or whatever. THR: Which means you're likely to turn your podcast interviews into half-hour sit-lower interview shows? Simmons: Yeah. Should you consider the ESPN schedule, you will find lots of occasions where, say, a game title 7 fell through, or they thought a game title would happen also it doesn't. Or at this time, where they thought they'd have many of these National basketball association games they don't have. They've time, and when you've evergreen content you are able to provide them with, they're likely to run it whether it's good. THR: So far as visitors go, who's around the wish list? Simmons: I believe the very best podcasts we've done happen to be ones where individuals are wise. Used to do a podcast with Ticketmaster Boss [Nathan Hubbard], that we thought was great. I'd enjoy having Aaron Sorkin on. Ray David could be really fun. Anyone who has produced an excellent show -- David Simon or Matthew Weiner. I'm able to always get commissioners and sports people, however i'd prefer to dive into Hollywood a bit more. I'm approaching it just a little in a different way. I believe once they do industry interviews, it's always "inside baseball." This will probably be a great conversation. THR: What else would you like related to Grantland that you simply haven't yet? Simmons: We discuss it as if you will find TV seasons. Season one, which we simply finished, involved not heading down in flames, building a crowd and employing a complete staff, which we didn't have until Labor Day. We now have four more employs to create, only then do we'll be achieved at about 16 total. Season two is ongoing to obtain authors. One thing which i was wishing happens immediately was getting celebs to create for all of us. When a celebrity who are able to really write really wants to write something, they are doing it for that Huffington Publish, which pisses me off. THR: In May, before Grantland released, you stated within an interview that you simply weren't sure you'd produce the site should you needed to get it done once again. Still believe way? Simmons: It had been most likely the worst possible time that i can did a job interview. I was starting in four days, and that we weren't ready, and that i may potentially go lower in flames. Look, we released before we ought to have, and that we didn't have sufficient people. We had watching people us and were hypercritical the very first couple of days -- that we didn't think was totally fair, however i have it. Exactly the same factor happened whenever we released Jimmy's show. You receive judged because of your first week when you get judged because of your 30th week. Jimmy's show didn't even become the show that it's now until 18 several weeks in. He is able to say all he wants, but he's filled with shit. (Laughs.) You learn, and also you get some things wrong. Jon Lovett: Clearly, my encounters will probably inform a few things i do, but this family might have absolutely nothing associated with the best choice. It's serendipitous ... that we stood a winding up in Jason, which he stated this idea he and Josh Gad happen to be thinking about. I realize that world and the way the White-colored House works, but this is not about me telling tales within the White-colored House. THR: Also are you aware us in regards to the project? Ricky Gervais on Golden Globes Bubble, and 6 Other Stories You'll Be Talking About Today

Happy Tuesday! Also in today’s edition of The Broadsheet: Channing Tatum is the latest subject of Man From U.N.C.L.E. rumors… Felicity Jones will Hughes it up with Warren Beatty… We’re exporting Meryl Streep and Joel Coen to China… and more. · The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has until the end of this week to determine whether or not it wants to bring Ricky Gervais back for his third Golden Globes hosting gig in January. I can’t even believe this is a real internal debate — of course they invite Gervais back (assuming he even wants to host; at this point he’d actually get more attention turning this sad, sad group down than he would taking their money and drinking their beer onstage). But here’s the “controversy” as it reportedly stands today: “NBC has put the HFPA in a lose-lose situation. If the Hollywood Foreign Press says ‘Yes’ to Ricky, it risks turning the Globes into The Ricky Gervais Show and leaving the impression that they’re annually throwing a great party while inviting someone who humiliates all of the guests. If it says ‘No,’ the HFPA looks like it has no sense of humor about itself.” Actually, no: It puts any nominees who decline to attend in the position of having no sense of humor about themselves, and since everyone’s paying to play anyway, who’s going to not show up? Do it, already, HFPA. [Deadline] · Could Channing Tatum be the lead for The Man From U.N.C.L.E? Someone’s agent seems to think so. [Deadline] · Actual headline: “Russell Brand to Star in and Produce Comedy The President Stole My Girlfriend.” And Russell Brand stole my will to live. [THR] · Breakout Like Crazy actress Felicity Jones has apparently nabbed the female lead in Warren Beatty’s long-gestating Howard Hughes film that may or may not actually get made in our lifetimes. [Deadline] · Meryl Streep and Joel Coen are among the Americans headed to a cultural summit in Beijing, where Streep will screen The Iron Lady for the first time. Tough crowd! [Variety] · With J. Edgar dead in both the box-office and Oscar water, an autopsy in no doubt in order. Who knew that it was 9 percent Watchmen? That’s enough to kill anything. [Moviefone] · Below is the only Steve Jobs tribute you’ll ever need, and this terrific interview with its illusionist, Paul Gertner, persuasively explains why. Brilliant, heartbreaking stuff that nevertheless makes me want to smash my Mac to bits. [Press Play/indieWIRE]

Napa Valley fest pairs pics, wine

Napa Valley Film Festival co-founders Marc and Brenda Lhormer are about to bring in their first harvest. The scale of the Nov. 9-13 festival is ambitious one for an inaugural outing: More than 100 films will be presented at 12 venues (albeit only one of them a formal theater), including Alexander Payne's opening-nighter, "The Descendants," which unspools at the 400-seat Napa Valley Opera House, and "J. Edgar" screening as a sneak preview Nov. 8. A $10,000 unrestricted cash prize awaits the winner of the narrative competition, and industryites will lead a daylong seminar for filmmakers. As befits a festival set in the heart of California's wine country, though, the focus is on feasting and imbibing as much as on the films; 125 area wineries will help lubricate the festivities, which open with a gala for 800 at the Robert Mondavi Winery, featuring an impressive array of Napa Valley-based chefs. The Lhormers already had a well-established rep as fest organizers after seven years at the head of the Sonoma Valley Film Festival, in the adjacent, more rural, winemaking county. But they learned firsthand the pitfalls and pleasures of indie filmmaking and distribution when they produced 2008's "Bottle Shock," about Napa wines' triumph at a pivotal 1976 Paris tasting. The next spring, the two were talking with Sonoma Valley resident and winery owner John Lasseter, who also happens to be Pixar and Walt Disney's animation honcho, and he suggested Napa Valley was ripe for its own film festival. While 2009 wasn't the best year to raise money, the Lhormers attracted local patrons from among the scenic towns of Calistoga, Napa, St. Helena and Yountville, which have their share of deep-pocketed Silicon Valley entrepreneurs as well as notable industryites. Still, Marc Lhormer termed the festival an "entrepreneurial venture funded by sweat equity."The Lhormers pitched the Napa's Destination Council -- the valley's tourism board -- on the idea, emphasizing that the festival's potential cultural draw would marry well with the valley's epicurean rep. Meadowood Napa Valley resort liked the concept enough to sponsor the festival's artists-in-residence program as well as a workshop for filmmakers; it's also underwriting the narrative competition prize."We wanted to find something to contribute that would be meaningful," says Ann Marie Conover, the resort's director of marketing. The daylong master class at Meadowood brings biz mentors and filmmakers together. Expected forum participants include John Sloss of Cinetic Media (and narrative jury prexy), producer Michael De Luca (whose feature "Butter" is screening at the fest) and producer/manager Keith Addis. In addition to the local support, the fest has since signed on big corporate sponsors, including Virgin America and Mercedes Benz. Lhormer notes that the fest's mid-November date is intended to attract awards-season studio pics. Indie filmmakers got the pitch, too, via a well-attended launch party at Sundance 2011 featuring wine from 16 Napa Valley wineries.Although landing high profile pics is a notable coup for a first-ever fest, the festival's challenge then becomes how to lure auds to see those films without the draw of name talent or docus that take on difficult topics. "We've done a lot of niche marketing," explains Lhormer. Writer-director Nicholas Ozeki, who has made the rounds of the festival circuit via several short films and his debut feature "Mamitas," says the fest organizers have impressed him. "I've been to a good cross-section of festivals out there, and one of the most important things for filmmakers is an atmosphere of appreciation," he says. "It's gratifying that the people organizing the festival know how much work goes into making a film." Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

21 Jump St Red-colored-colored Band Trailer Arrives

Cops and knob gagsFrom the beginning, 21 Jump Street made an appearance being an odd proposition. A film based on an eighties Tv program, given an action comedy overhaul by Jonah Hill and Scott Pilgrim co-author Michael Bacall? Which stars Hill and Channing Tatum (who to date has received handful of options to really show comic chops) as mismatched buddy cops going undercover inside a local secondary school? Though the look in the film's first trailer, a extended, Red-colored-colored Band affair full of promising, it seems enjoy it might be probably the most fun films to achieve in 2012. Take a look within the promo below. When we're slightly concerned at how extended this factor is (it clocks in at greater than three minutes), it's certainly got the comedy goods. As directed by Cloudy Getting Possible Of Meatballs' Phil Our god and Chris Burns, Hill and Channing make a stylish pair as Schmidt and Jenko, a duo who've been the archetypal jock and nerd in secondary school, but who bond although within the police academy mostly because Schmidt gets the brains to feed tests and Jenko might be the experience guy. However, if their first police duties are not like the high-speed excitement they expected, they volunteer to help smash a drugs ring. The supporting cast is beyond solid, using the type of Betty Kemper, Dork Franco, Ice Cube and Make the most of Riggle arriving. As well as in the looks from the, Nick Offerman introduced the whole Ron Effing Swanson to cope with on his role since the large chief. Just his delivery round the phrase "you idiots" has us laughing.Hopefully this doesn't showcase all the good bits and you'll find much more to look when 21 Jump Street appears for cine-duty on March 16.

'Ashton Kutcher is the King of Commitment,' and 8 Other Revelations From The Double Star Topher Grace

In the upcoming political thriller The Double, Topher Grace and Richard Gere star as an unlikely duo of intelligence agents paired to solve the mystery of a senator’s murder. The twisty plot leads them through a trail involving a psychopathic Soviet assassin (Stephen Moyer), Shakespearean code names and one double (get it) identity that culminates with a surprising ending in screenwriter Michael Brandt’s (3:10 to Yuma, Wanted) directorial debut. To promote the film — due in theaters this Friday — Topher Grace met with a handful of journalists in Beverly Hills yesterday to discuss, among other things, Richard Gere’s incredible calmness, the state of his relationship with the ’70s Show cast and to make one unfortunately ironic statement about his friend and former co-star Ashton Kutcher. Revelations ahead! 1. Babies hate Topher Grace. [While discussing some of the things he learned while preparing for this role.] “And then there was holding a baby — [that] was the scariest of all the things. I don’t think I mastered that. Odette was so good with the kid and then she’d pass it to me and it would just start crying. I never held a baby before. […] It’s twins so that you can swap them out but both babies hated me.” 2. Richard Gere prays for fallen insects. “He’s really zen, man. The rumors are true. We were at this dinner and it was me, Odette and him in this scene where we’re having dinner. There are bugs all over the place and I’m [smacks imaginary bugs all over his body] and I look over [at Richard] and am like, ‘Oh, sorry.’ He’s friends with the Dalai Lama and stuff. He says, ‘Don’t worry, I’m saying a prayer for each [mosquito you kill].’” 3. Speaking of Richard Gere, the actor is also cool with you sucking blood from his face. “Then, during the scene, and this was incredible and shows what a great guy he is — it bleeds into his roles how unflappable he is. This mosquito landed and was pumping blood out of his cheek. […] It had been awhile and this mosquito is getting fat with blood. And he finally said, ‘There’s a mosquito on my cheek, huh?’ And he lifted it [mimes gently lifting a mosquito off his cheek and tossing it into the air] and said, ‘Enjoy the snack.’ It’s crazy. I was blown away by that kind of stillness.” 4. Topher Grace finds adultery-related greeting card gags funny — but also in bad taste. “I have this family portrait that’s in the film [of him, Odette and their movie children] that I put in my office at home. I told Odette that I was going to send it out as our Christmas card. [Laughs] She just got married by the way so that would have been in really bad taste.” 5. Yes, the ’70s Show alum has slept in a bunk bed in the past year. [Responding to a question about The Wedding, which he filmed with Diane Keaton, Robert De Niro and Katherine Heigl last summer:] “It was shot in my hometown. That was just a coincidence but my folks still live there and I slept in my bunk bed from when I was twelve.” 6. He calls Katherine Heigl ‘Katie.’ [Describing The Wedding, due in theaters next year] “Diane [Keaton] and Robert De Niro are my and Katie Heigl’s folks. Susan Sarandon and Robin Williams are kind of the stepparents.” 7. Topher has a gift for making incredibly ironic statements about Ashton Kutcher, given the media storm surrounding his supposed affair. [When asked if he was surprised that his ’70s Show castmates have gone on to enjoy such successful careers] “It strikes me that I’ve had work after the show. That is amazing. But I knew their talent — better than a lot of people who were just watching the show because I was with them every day. I’m not surprised at all. Ashton is the king of commitment. If you give him something, he will commit to it. I saw him be given some ridiculous things and he commits to it so much it becomes real and really good.” 8. The ’70s Show cast still hangs out. “[Mila] just went to Laura Prepon’s sitcom taping. She was also doing a Chelsea Handler show and I went with Wilmer [Valderrama], who’s also doing a show on NBC. Then we went next door and visited Ashton. We were all standing there like, ‘Whoa.’ We’re all those cliches. We’re really close and we all love each other. “ 9. Topher Grace is not motivated by motivational speakers. [While discussing his preparation for the role of a motivational speaker in the upcoming Giant Mechanical Man] “It was depressing. It motivated me to make fun of them. I can’t wait to do press for that because I feel like I have so much to say about that. What makes one human being stand up and tell other human beings how to be living their life?” Follow Julie Miller on Twitter. Follow Movieline on Twitter.

Well, it's true, and a new press release offers up some more details from the film. For Your Consideration: The Evolving Role of Screeners in the Awards Race (Analysis)

An abbreviated version of this article first appeared in the Oct. 28 issue of The Hollywood Reporter. For filmmakers, whose primary goal is usually to make art, the ideal way for a movie to be seen is on the big screen. But for awards strategists, whose primary job is to deliver nominations and wins from the Academy, critics, guilds, other awards-dispensing organizations, any way of reaching voters -- some of whom live far from the advance screening hubs of Los Angeles and NY and/or are too busy or frail to get to many screenings -- will do. A bit of history Studios have been offering voters an alternative method of seeing their films -- namely, "screeners" -- since the late 1980s, when strategic awards "campaigns" first became commonplace. These copies of their films -- which were first mailed to voters on VHS, and then DVD, and now sometimes even Blu-Ray -- can cost studios hundreds of thousands of dollars to produce and distribute -- sometimes even millions, depending on how many voting bodies they wish to send them to. (There are roughly 6,500 members of the Academy and 98,000 members of the Screen Actors Guild, to cite but two of them.) But to those who see great prestige and profit in the reflection of awards statuettes -- especially the most coveted of all, the Oscar -- it is regarded as money well spent. PHOTOS: Backstage at the 83rd Academy Awards Indeed, screeners have helped to level the playing field, in the sense that voters no longer have any excuse for why they can't see -- and therefore "consider" -- a film for awards. Weather, work, and whatever else might once have precluded them from making a screening are now non-issues, since they can now pop a film into an entertainment console anywhere and anytime that's convenient for them. And while some voters still see and vote for only the most hyped films each year -- or, worse yet, don't see them and/or invite relatives or assistants to fill out their ballots -- most take advantage of the convenience and wind up seeing and rewarding a lot of little movies that they otherwise might not have. Many industry analysts believe that acting Oscars would never have been awarded to Roberto Benigni for Life Is Beautiful (1998), Hilary Swank for Boys Don't Cry (1999), Marcia Gay Harden for Pollock (2000) or Halle Berry for Monster's Ball (2001) had voters not seen them on screeners. Moreover, they argue, the shocking best picture win of Crash over Brokeback Mountain (both 2005) is probably directly attributable to the fact that Lionsgate took the then-unprecedented, "really, really expensive" step -- later copied by Little Miss Sunshine (2006) and Black Swan (2010) en route to best picture nods of their own -- of sending a screener to every single member of SAG, leading to a best ensemble win there and a surge of familiarity and popularity among actors (who represent the largest branch of the Academy) right before Oscar voting closed. ANALYSIS: What the New Oscar Campaign Rules Mean for Awards Season In more recent years, however, two conflicting pressures have arisen: there is more competition than ever before to get films seen by voters, but there is also more concern than ever before about protecting those films from being leaked before their commercial releases to the general public. In the age of the Internet, film "piracy" -- as in, the illegal replication and distribution of films -- has become a major problem, and one that can cost a studio massive amounts of money at the box-office. Since the sources of at least a few such leaks have been identified as awards voters who either deliberately or carelessly allowed their screeners to get into the wrong hands, studios have been forced to seek alternative and safer ways of getting their films into the right hands. That -- as well as a desire on the part of the Academy to embrace modern technology and promote green-awareness -- led to an announcement last month that has literally changed the rules of the game. Report: Dvr viewing enhancing b'casters

Fox's "Fringe" has proven a good deal of traction in Dvr houses. Dvr viewing can be a boon for the broadcast systems. That's one of the conclusions in the report launched Wednesday by influential Wall Street analyst Michael Nathanson of Nomura Opportunities.Inside an analysis of Dvr viewing within the last four years, Nathanson learned that the split of viewing between broadcast and cable nets is nearly 50-50 among Dvr clients, compared to some 75%-25% split meant for cablers for live viewing. The Tv biz's alternation in 2008 from live program ratings to so-referred to as C3 ratings -- ratings for ads on live broadcasts additionally done within 72 hrs of Dvr playback -- since the currency to advertise deals has furthermore been an optimistic factor for tv producers, Nathanson argues. Audiences frequently stick with the ads running in broadcast network programming a lot more than most cablers."The modification to C3 measurement, along with the ongoing rollout of DVRs, will boost the relative positioning in the broadcast systems -- as well as the conglomerates that own them -- and certain cable systems that have built appointment viewing," he written. It's also delivering a lifeline for shows like Fox's "Fringe" that deliver modest amounts live but they're popular in Dvr houses. The lift provided through the extra 72 hrs of playback inside the C3 measure has substantially slowed down lower the rate of decline in grownups 18-49 rating for your Large Four. As well as the section of Dvr viewing inside the total 18-49 ratings grows inside a fast clip, as Dvr transmission develops. According to Nielsen, 42% of U.S. TV houses have DVRs, up from 38% last season.Inside the 2008-09 season, grownups 18-49 C3 ratings for your Large Four were up 3% over live ratings inside the same measure last season, the C3 amounts were up 9.7%.Remarkably, Nathan's research also ensures that less Dvr clients are choosing the device's commercial-missing feature -- a technology that was once seen because the dying-knell of advertising supported TV. According to Nathanson, 58.8% of programs seen via Dvr playback involved commercial missing inside the 2007-8 season by last season, that number had dropped to 50.7% Contact Cynthia Littleton at cynthia.littleton@variety.com

CBS News Wins 10 News and Documentary Emmys

Getty ImagesRachel Maddow, left, and Anderson Cooper NEW YORK -- CBS News walked off with 10 Emmys at the 32ndAnnual News and Documentary Emmy Awards Monday night in NY, the most of any network. TheCBS Evening News With Katie Couric won awards including Emmys for continuing coverage (for correspondent Terry McCarthy's "Afghan Bomb Squad") and investigative journalism (for correspondent Armen Keteyian's report about the hidden dangers of photocopiers). Couric did not attend the ceremony. But Scott Pelley, who took over as anchor of the CBS Evening News in June, took the podium to accept multiple Emmys for 60 Minutes, including reports on the BP oil spill and the high percentage of NFL players who hail from the tiny island nation of Samoa. Pelley thanked his producers at CBS News and noted that "one of the terrible things about being a television news reporter is you receive far too much credit for the work of others." 60 Minutes also won the Emmy for outstanding interview for Lara Logan's piece on Staff Sgt. Salvatore Augustine Giunta, who last year became the first Medal of Honor winner since the Vietnam War. Presenters included ABC News' Brain Ross, MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell, CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta and PBS' Gwen Ifill, who acknowledged the quickly changing new-media landscape that has upended the role of TV news. "Audiences increasingly get the news from everyone but us," said Ifill, citing the web and social media including Twitter. "All of that is fine, but news still needs a curator." Cable networks have become increasingly competitive at the National Academy's signature news and documentary awards. And National Geographic Channel earned the second-most Emmys with seven, including multiple awards for Tim Hetherington and Sebastian Junger's Restrepo: Afghan Outpost. Hetherington was killed last April in Libya. And Junger accepted the award for long-form coverage of a news story accompanied by Hetherington's mother Judith. His death, said Junger, has left "a gaping absence. He devoted his life to chronicling the human cost of war." PBS earned six Emmys with four going to POV documentaries and one to documentary series Independent Lens. But the public broadcaster's flagship newsmagazine Frontline, traditionally the recipient of numerous and significant Emmy awards, received only one -- for its promotional campaign. It was a "consolation" prize, noted longtime executive producer David Fanning. And ABC News was shut out entirely. Discovery Channel took home three Emmys, including multiple awards for First Life With David Attenborough. Anderson Cooper 360 earned both of CNN's Emmys and both were for reports from earthquake ravaged Haiti, a story the network spent much time and resources to cover. Accepting the Emmy for coverage of a breaking news story for "Haiti in Ruins," correspondent Gary Tuchman thanked his "bosses who got us out the door within minutes [of the earthquake] and said, 'Spend whatever you have to spend.'" Cooper was unable to attend because he was on the air. Rachel Maddow was also a no-show because she was hosting her MSNBC show, which earned the the Emmy for discussion and analysis for "Good Morning, Landlocked Central Asia," which was reported by Maddow and NBC News chief foreign correspondent Richard Engel. NBC News earned two Emmys for Nightly News and Dateline. Larry King was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Introducing King, Brian Williams asked the audience to "consider these three numbers: 25, 40 and 50,000" for King's years as host of CNN's Larry King Live, years in broadcasting and number of interviews conducted. "And that's all I have," quipped Williams. "I came unprepared as an homage, a word I will explain to Larry King later." After the laughs subsided, Williams explained that King's talent as an interviewer was that he approached his guests with a fresh eye and without preconceived opinions. "He was a guy from Brooklyn who loved to talk to people and loved to tell a story," said Williams. "You wouldn't dream of making news and not following it up with a visit to his table." A video tribute featured a slew of famous faces who made the pilgrimage toLarry King Live (Elizabeth Taylor, Bill Clinton, Vladimir Putin, Al Gore and Ross Perot, the parents of JonBenet Ramsay and Marlon Brando famously kissing King on the mouth). King took the stage dressed in a black suit and shrugged off his jacket to reveal is signature suspenders. "I was lucky enough to be in a business where I really didn't have to work," said an emotional King. "It was unbelievable to go in every night and meet people and ask them questions. It was a privilege, a privilege." King thanked his producers, his brother, his children, his step-children, his in-laws, his "cousin from Brooklyn," Williams and Dan Rather, his "two favorite people." "Anybody else? Who am I forgetting? Oh yeah, the wife," laughed King, exhorting Shawn Southwick, his seventh wife, to stand. Said King: "Behind every man is a woman shoving him aside to get the attention." EMMYS: Lead Comedy Actress Handicap

Ray Richmond is contributing to Payment dates 2011 Emmy coverage. Heres his scorecard assessing the Outstanding Lead Comedy Series Actress race. Laura Linney, The Big C Showtime Why She Was Nominated: Because, well, the tv academy couldnt perfectly not nominate her. Her role since the cancer-stricken Trina Jamison inside the Large C showcases Linneys enchanting acting range and depth. And shes furthermore a 3-time Oscar nominee. This one thing makes Linney significant brownie points and makes her Emmy nomination a formality no matter project or role. Obtaining a past film pedigree remains plenty huge. Why She Must Win: Simply pointed out, Linney never handles to get rid of. Shes been nominated for Emmys three occasions: lead actress in the movie/miniseries two occasions (2002 for Showtimes Wild Iris, 2008 for HBOs John Adams) to ensure that as guest comedy actress once (2004 for Frasier). Shes won every time. In addition, Linneys The Big C submission might be the pilot episode that finds her shifting effortlessly between high emotion and dark humor. Oh, along with the past group of individuals who win inside the category — Toni Collette and Edie Falco — recognized from similar Showtime dramedies. Why She Cant Possibly Win: Sooner or later, somebody determines when you are undertaking a seriocomic submit half-hour series, its potential more serio than comic. Falco mentioned it herself onstage after winning a year ago for Nurse Jackie: Oh situation most likely probably the most absurd factor that has ever happened inside the good status with this lovely honours show. Thank you. I'm not funny. Linney isn't as purely funny in their role similar to her rivals here — and, well, this ought to be a comedy award. When matters. Amy Poehler, Parks and Entertainment NBC Why She Was Nominated: Poehler isn't any more seen as Saturday Evening Live refugee but a primetime treasure within their right. Her confidence and irreverence have grown to be greatly since Parks and Entertainment opened up a few previously, which year she acquired noms for acting to ensure that like a set producer. Amy is just killing it every week relating to this show, thinks an actress and voting academy member. Shes also ornamented having a hysterical and highly underrated cast. Why She Must Win: Getting now spent a couple of years needing to pay her dues — with five total Emmy nominations to her credit — Poehler can be a known commodity whose genius remains anointed by fellow genius and greatest friend Tina Fey. Her episodic submission, “Flu Season,” perfectly showcases her comedy chops as her alter ego Leslie Knope fights off flu signs and signs and symptoms and her medications narcotic undesirable effects. As if everything werent enough, shes switched 40 on Friday, and so the birthday gods are along with her. Why She Cant Possibly Win: Buzz might not be enough, specifically when you are ornamented by Linney on a single for yellows and Fey alternatively as Poehler is this time around around. And again, yesteryear couple of years this category remains less about obtaining the laughs laptop or computer gets the tears. Confirms a collection producer, If theyre prone to require giving this Emmy to someone delivering dramatic work, then affect the title in the category to steer Actress Doing Whatever. Tina Fey, 30 Rock NBC Why She Was Nominated: Are you currently presently kidding? Duh! This makes 19 Emmy nominations for Fey in the event you add these up. Shes won seven of those, including lead acting for 30 Rock in 2008. She remains a comedy goddess also nominated for creating 30 Rock and guest performing on SNL (she lost). Within the this past year, she also added a best-selling memoir to her credit sheet. A cabinet publish cant be far behind, particularly should you-know-who comprises a late entry into the presidential race. Why She Must Win: This wouldnt be as major an upset as it can certainly appear. Fey completed for consideration a lively and energetic performance inside the published episode which has guest Matt Damon playing her boyfriend. So theres the extra star energy. An Emmy-winning author described, Id election for Tina Fey if she were nominated for supermarket checker. If there's a backlash against another Showtime actress while using prize, Fey could again sneak up. Why She Cant Possibly Win: The vibe with voters is always that theyve honored Fey enough. Shes already taken home Emmys in five different groups, on her behalf acting, writing and creating capabilities. The lady also hasnt exactly been underexposed yesteryear five years. After five years, Fey is most likely inside the honored-just-being-nominated phase of her 30 Rock existence. Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie Showtime Why She Was Nominated: She won for lead actress this past year, and Falco has proven an greatly popular artist while using TV academy within the last dozen years — extremely popular they carted in the statuette for just about any role on Nurse Jackie that even she confesses isn't whatsoever funny. That is Falcos ninth nomination, and shes formerly won 50% of your energy (plus a trio of wins for your Sopranos in 1999, 2001 and 2003). Why She Must Win: Well, as last years triumph attests, voters love Falco a great deal that theyll even recognition her on her behalf comedy when shes not trying to create laughs. A producer notifies me, In my opinion they just selected for Edie a year ago from habit, without disturbing to look for the show as well as the category. Whether or not this happened once, it could happen again. Why She Cant Possibly Win: Nevertheless it probably wont. Linney will probably be drawing lots of serious actress doing quasi-comedy election. Furthermore, it's not vulnerable to help that in turning up so shocked while chastising the academy for giving her when shes not funny, the romance with Falco will diminish. Voters may frequently believe her now. Melissa McCarthy, Mike & Molly CBS Why She Was Nominated: The most recent kid round the comedy block received her first-ever Emmy jerk for Mike & Molly in large measure from her much-buzzed performance inside the feature Bridesmaids. Warmth is constantly build for McCarthy just like a talent, which explains why she could overcome the stigma to become around the CBS series handful of are talking about. Why She Must Win: An upset possibility looms. Of all of the competitors in this race, McCarthy may be the best pure comic. A contingent of voters will gravitate her way because of the very fact she stars around the traditional comedy. As there are her growing film resume (she’s presently shooting a Judd Apatow feature) as well as the sense that McCarthys star will shoot into orbit. A voting author described, In my opinion Melissa will draw most of the youthful election. Popular movie (Knocked Up) also aided Katherine Heigl win the Emmy for Greys Anatomy in 2007. Why She Cant Possibly Win: Its rare the actress wins in their maiden Emmy voyage. The normal routine requires a couple of deficits before the very first is considered worth drawing the winning hands. Furthermore, it's not as if your competitors isn't thick. Barring just a little miracle, McCarthys time lay later on, though much less far. Martha Plimpton, Raising Hope Fox Why She Was Nominated: Some were amazed at this, nonetheless they shouldnt are actually. Plimpton remains bubbling individually distinct since she hit screens just like a kid inside the mid-eighties inside the Goonies. Shes an extremely respected talent which has attracted raves and Tony nominations on her behalf Broadway work lately additionally to plenty of chatter for Foxs Raising Hope. Why She Must Win: Lots of people Ive spoken to positively respected Martha inside the episode shes up for, states another actor. Its about her character (Virginia Chance) fighting to acquire her family together for just about any picture, which is just amusing. Getting an inspired submission should count for something. In the perfect world, it may be also enough to propel Plimpton with a shocking upset win. Why She Cant Possibly Win: This isn't anything close to a perfect world. Getting nothing associated with how good Plimpton is on Raising Hope, both she and her series not have the sufficient buzz with an actress landing her second nomination (the initial coming 2002 just like a guest on NBCs Law & Order: SVU). This nom may serve as category filler if this involves obtaining a genuine chance, nevertheless the suspicion is always that Plimpton will probably be back here again before too extended.
